The church of St John the Baptist was probably one of the
earliest buildings in the town, but despite its ancient foundations
in Norman times, only the tower survives from that period.
Virtually the entire nave was rebuilt in the 1860s following
a long period of dereliction.
The tower possesses a unique one-handed clock, recently restored,
and houses a peal of six bells. They mostly date from the
18th century and their details and inscriptions are listed
here.
